No, you don't need a 7TV account or subscription, but 7Overlay is dependent on 7TV, so you would support 7Overlay if you make a 7TV account or subscribe.
To secure your account data safely, you have to login with Twitch. This also allows us to get the token scope from your Twitch account for the subscriber list to use the subcount widget. Your Twitch token is safe and no one can view it. If you are not an affiliate on Twitch, it will not affect you either way.
